Was Jesus popular?

Updated: Nov 15, 2020

As I think about the person of Christ and how he walked on the earth.. I wonder how he would be received today if he walked into certain churches or even get togethers.

Jesus seemed to really shake things up. Nobody who encountered him was left the same. He either offended them or healed them. Whether people liked him or not He made a difference in society.

Jesus was needed by the multitude.

Hated by many but only loved by a few.

Isaiah 53:3 tells us He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

As a disciple of Christ you should expect the same pattern.

Luke 6:26 Says Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

I used to read this scripture and not understand what it meant..if I’m bearing the fruits of the spirit, treating others with love and respect… then why then would people not like me? People are naturally drawn to me because of my warm smile and personality, just the other day I received two compliments about my smile brightening up someones day and that is to the Glory of God but as I’m maturing I’m starting to understand what it means. Ever heard the saying ‘you have to stand for something.. unless you will fall for anything.’ As a follower of Christ there are many things I cannot compromise on… for eg. my sexual purity ( I don’t believe in any kind of sexual activity outside of the context of marriage between a man and a woman). This also means that I may not always be up to date with the latest dance moves or Afro-beat song (I know quite a few though.) I’m sociable and I believe I’m a light im dark places but you won’t find me at every and any festival. What I’m saying is just because the majority are doing it doesn’t mean it’s okay for me- that’s down to my relationship with God based on his word and conviction from the Holy Spirit. People may not like that but I believe when you are confident in who you are- people will have to respect your boundaries because they are unmovable.

Many people are believers but not followers of Jesus..they may believe in Christ because they know they need him.. but Followers.. follow because they are in love with him.. there’s a difference.

We live in a society where popularity is important to ones status in life, what I mean is people can easily make a living on popularity through their social media followers.

But just because you are popular does not mean you are doing the will of God.

I don’t know about you but I’d rather be despised by men but be accepted by God. I know it’s easier said than done but I’d rather let others think I’m boring than go against Gods word.

The truth is the gospel saves and gives us grace but it also empowers a change of lifestyle- which makes it offensive to many.

This was why it was impossible for Christ to fit in.

Living for Christ may cost you your popularity. Don’t let anyone deceive you. You may lose friends but God (Jesus) is your best friend. I know it sound far-fetched but remember He is ALWAYS with you and you can talk to Him about anything. He won’t judge you and will send you the Holy Spirit to help you.

Remember I said.. He was loved by a few. This means He will also send you a few people who love you unconditionally, will lead you closer to him and will help you fulfil your purpose.

Be encouraged.. choose Christ over popularity because what the world gives the world can take away but what God can give you is eternal life- that will never be taken away from you.
