Family.
That word is interpreted differently by different people, for some of us it means our biological family. Our Mums, Dads, Uncles, Aunties cousins and so on…
However, I beg to differ, I think that Family stretches far beyond that.
One of my favourite movie franchise’s is The Fast and Furious, why you may ask?
I don’t actually know, I think I started watching it when I was younger and it just stuck with me (Hence why I was so heartbroken by the death of Paul Walker R.I.P.).
I remember even watching it when I was volunteering in Nicaragua and just feeling that sense of Home.
What I do know is that one of the main themes of the Franchise is Family. What I love about it is that it’s all about Loyalty, the characters are so diverse but they are all about protecting what is theirs (and sometimes stealing what isn’t). I’m not saying that the film is a guideline for morality because it really shouldn’t but the point is that they are all using their different skills to work together towards a common goal and once they achieve it everyone gets their cut and everyones happy (Unless you’re not part of their team/family).
I remember leaving secondary school and feeling rather sad because I really felt that my secondary school friends were my family. I spent most of my time with them and that separation was hard to begin with. I was so invested in that place that when we got our GCSE results I felt to celebrate the success of others.
Family to me ‘are the people who we choose to spend our lives with.’
I’m not by any means trying to diminish the idea of a biological family at all, as it is something that I value a lot and I think that it serves a great purpose.
However when I really think about it, family is so much more than that. Family is about connection and most importantly Love, now that’s family.
God bless you.
